Originally the overcoat was worn by the military and naval background. The coat has been around since the 1800s when the first variation was worn by the Dutch at sea, and it was made from coarse wool fabric. Then the British started the popularisation of the overcoat, they were often worn as military and formalwear to represent the wearer’s social status or as part of their uniform, both professional and military. While the overcoat evolved with time it became more popular and fashionable in the 20th century especially in the 30s and 40s.
