The Mercerization process was devised in the mid-1800s by John Mercer who treated cotton with sodium hydroxide! To mercerize cotton, it is submerged in sodium hydroxide, also known as caustic soda or lye. This is done in repeated short bursts, while immersed in the solution the fiber is kept under tension, this is to prevent shrinkage, then an acidic bath is used to neutralize the alkali treatments. Mercerized cotton will be shinier and stronger than non-mercerized varieties, the dye takes to mercerized cotton easier and thus produces richer tones.
